Chiringuito El Madero

One of many

I used to quite like this Chiringuito, however my last visit wasn’t so good. The prices have increased and the portions have shrunk. The food is good quality, but it’s not good value…

I’ve visited El Madero a number of times and always enjoyed the experience, until my last visit in April 2025.

We ordered a selection of very expensive dishes, including Calamari (€22 for 5 pieces), a salad (€17, small) and an Espeto of Sardines (€12 for 5). We wanted some rice but as it starts at €40 for just two people we gave it a miss.

The Calamari were labelled up on the menu as being €20 but when the bill arrived they were €22. When we questioned this a very rude waiter said it was an error on the menu. We asked for the €2 and he practially through it at us. Not a nice experience.

Very expensive Chiriguito with small portions.

What we like

  • Tasty, well-presented food.
  • Live music on some nights.
  • Central beach location.

What we don’t like

  • Very Expensive
  • Small portions
  • Rude service

I would have liked to have been able to order half a portion of fried anchovies but unfortunately it was not possible. It was my favorite dish but I did not like it in this restaurant. Extra side of warm vegetables consisted of only potatoes and carrots!!! Not at all affordable and loud music.

We had a lovely dinner of fire grilled sea bass and sea bream. Both perfectly cooked and moist under the seared skin. Delicious! The staff were smiling and attentive. We’ll definitely be back.

The Food

The food at El Madero is good. It’s fancy beach bar food with a price to match.

Their espetero is good and the fish cooked on the fire is always delicious. On the downside the portions can sometimes seem small for the money.

  • Tasty well-presented food
  • Skilled espetero
  • Choice of seafood and meat
  • Very expensive for the quantity

The Location

As you’d expect, El Madero is on the beach!

It’s on La Rada, right next to a busy part of the old town, so it’s easier to find.

They have some cool-looking ‘elephant tusks’ over the path to the beach.

  • Easy-to-find spot on the beach
  • Lots of sun beds and loungers
  • Choice of inside and outside seating.

They are open every day in the summer. During the winter, they usually close, like most of the Chinguitos in Estepona.
